Eddie "Bare Knuckles" McSorley and "Gentleman" Joe Sullivan are two rival boxers in love with Jean, a feisty reporter, in this tough and tender original musical set in Hell's Kitchen in the '30s. A black-and-blue romance with a bruising climax and a colorful cast of pugs, thugs, and dames, Seeing Stars explores the world of "boys being boys" and the women who love them.

The Breithaupt Brothers – Don (composer, left) and Jeff (lyricist, right) – host a regular revue of their songs at New York’s Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater. Past performers include Tony Award-winners James Naughton and LaChanze, multiple Tony nominee Kelli O’Hara, Norm Lewis, Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Carolyn Leonhart, Catherine Russell, Denzal Sinclaire, Rebecca Martin, Adam Brazier, BETTY, Jamie Leonhart, Sarah Slean, Patricia O’Callaghan, and recent Grammy nominee Kate McGarry, among many others. Their songs have been featured on Showtime’s The L Word and have been recorded by Brent Carver, Dione Taylor, Adi Braun, Rikki Rumball, Denzal Sinclaire, Joe Coughlin, and Lorraine Lawson. Seeing Stars, an original "boxing musical" for which they wrote the music and lyrics, was read as part of the York Theater’s Developmental Reading Series in February 2009 and was selected as one of 12 "Next Link" shows for this year's New York Musical Theater Festival in October 2009. The Breithaupt Brothers Songbook revue will return to the CanWest Cabaret Festival in Toronto this fall (October 29 - November 1) and to Joe’s Pub at the Public Theater on Tuesday, November 17, 2009. Also this fall: the release of "Toronto Sings the Songs of the Breithaupt Brothers," a live CD recorded at the 2008 CanWest Cabaret Festival in Toronto. In August 2009, Don won an Emmy Award in the "Outstanding Original Song - Main Title and Promo" category for the theme to the animated series "6teen" (Cartoon Network). Don is based in Toronto; Jeff is based in Manhattan.

Shelley McPherson is a New York based performer and writer. Seeing Stars, an original "boxing musical" for which she wrote the book, was read as part of the York Theater’s Developmental Reading Series in February 2009. As an actress, New York Theatre includes: many shows at Joe's Pub at The Public Theatre, Queen's Theatre in the Park, HERE, New York Theatre Workshop, E.S.T., The Rude Mechanicals, and The Workshop Theatre Company. Regional Theatre includes: The Foreigner, The Crucible, and She Stoops to Conquer at The New Harmony Theatre; Wait Until Dark at Shadow Lawn Theatre; and Why Marry? at East Lynne Theatre Company.  Film and TV includes: the award-winning feature Fall Before Paradise and Guiding Light (CBS). Ms. Thompson is both a company member and Associate Producer of TACT/The Actors Company Theatre, having appeared in several productions and, most recently, directing last season’s critically-acclaimed production of Alan Ayckbourn's Bedroom Farce. Other directing credits for TACT include The Eccentricities of a Nightingale (included in the The New York Times “Top Ten Theatre Picks for 2008”), Ladies in Retirement, My 3 Angels, Rain and Kind Lady Other recent NYC directing credits include the world premieres of Badge by Matthew Schneck (Rattlestick), Term Limit by Viki Boyle (American Globe Theatre), The Brilliance Of Bernstein (featuring Phyllis Newman - American Musicals Project at the NY Historical Society) and Richard Thompson’s critically-acclaimed play Big Doolie, which sold out its run at the 10th Anniversary NYC Fringe Festival. As a Producing Director and founding company member of Connecticut’s award-winning River Rep Theatre Company, she has performed in over 40 plays and musicals and has, most recently, directed productions of The Foreigner, Dinner With Friends, The Heiress and Damn Yankees. As an actress her credits include extensive TV and Film appearances as well as the Tony Award-winning Broadway productions of Ah, Wilderness!, The Heiress, and Annie in addition to Off-Broadway productions at Playwrights’ Horizons, The Public Theatre; Soho Rep, The York; American Jewish Theatre; The Hudson Guild; W.P.A., Protean Theatre Company; Perry Street Theatre and Ubu Rep and work at many of the finest regional theaters across the country. Liza Gennaro (Choreographer)

LIZA GENNARO choreographed the  revival of  ONCE UPON A MATTRESS, starring Sarah Jessica Parker, and the critically acclaimed Broadway revival of THE MOST HAPPY FELLA, directed by Gerald Gutierrez. Her choreography for Roundabout Theater Company’s, TIN PAN ALLEY RAG is currently performing Off-Broadway. Regional theater credits include Stephen Flaherty and Frank Galati’s  LOVING, REPEATING: A MUSICAL OF GERTRUDE STEIN for the About Face Theater in Chicago, HAIR at Actor’s Theatre Of Louisville, directed by Jon Jory, the world premiere of A MY NAME IS STILL ALICE at The Old Globe in California, and the world premiere of MARTIN GUERRE at Hartford Stage, directed by Mark Lamos, BABES IN ARMS at Guthrie Theater, directed by Garland Wright, KISS ME KATE and THE MOST HAPPY FELLA at The Goodspeed Opera House, FIORELLO, GYPSY, MY FAIR LADY and THE SECRET GARDEN at Pittsburgh Civic Light Opera, GYPSY and RAGTIME at the Paper Mill Playhouse and eleven consecutive seasons of musicals at The St. Louis “Muny” Opera. Her choreography for the 30th Anniversary tour of ANNIE is currently touring the US and Canada. In 2005 Ms. Gennaro began interviewing influential musical theatre dancers and choreographers for the oral history division of the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center Library. Ms. Gennaro teaches at Barnard College and holds a master’s degree in Dance Studies from New York University. Her essay, “’Evolution of Dance in the Golden Era of the American 'Book Musical'” will appear in The Oxford Handbook of the American Musical to be published in 2010.

He’s played lead piano on Hair, Dreamgirls,The Boy From Oz, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Life, Rent etc. In 2008 he music directed/played and co-conceived Hot ‘n Cole  with James Naughton at the Westport Country Playhouse (music of Cole Porter). Also in 2008 he music directed/played/orchestrated and arranged the Transport Group’s world premier of Marcy in the Galaxy at the Connelly Theater. He has written music for HBO's Sex and the City. SHOWTIME’s Nurse Jackie, among many other television programs. Mark’s piano can be heard on the iconic Sex and the City theme! Berman has played and recorded with some of the biggest names in rock pop and jazz including, Aretha Franklin, Phoebe Snow, Carole King, Gladys Knight, Elvis Costello, Buddy Miles, Illinois Jacquette, Jackie McClean, Phil Ramone, etc.He has toured internationally having played such venues such as The Meadowlands, Palais des Congres (Paris), Hammerstein Ballroom, The Pantages (LA), Fox Theaters (US), The Blue Note(s) (New York/Japan) BB Kings, Birdland (NYC), Carnegie Hall and countless other US theaters.

Evan is delighted to be working again for his favorite director.  He has appeared on Broadway in Ivanov and An American Daughter (both for Lincoln Center) and the musicals City of Angels, 1776 and Jimmy; and Off Broadway in Everybody's Ruby (for the New York Shakespeare Festival), the Brecht/Weill opera Mahagonny, George Orwell's 1984, Stretch (a Fantasia) with The New Georges, Housebreaking at the Cherry Lane and Big Doolie (also for his favorite director) in the 2006 Fringe Festival.  Evan's regional credits include Grey Gardens for Portland (OR) Center Stage, Noises Off, A Christmas Carol and Sleuth at the Portland (ME) Stage Company and two DayTony Awards for his work in Copenhagen and Painting Churches with the Human Race Theatre Company. He has co-starred with his wife, Joan Shepard, in The Subject Was Roses at New Harmony IN and in many of his 67 roles in 20 seasons with the River Rep Theatre Company in Connecticut, including Joe Keller in All My Sons, Elwood P Dowd in Harvey and the title role in The Mikado under his other favorite director, son Owen Thompson.

Jessica is a recent graduate of Elon University where she most recently performed the role of Maggie in A Chorus Line. She has also been the park swing for Hershey Park’s show The Ultimate Road Trip. She will be performing at the Goodspeed Opera House this Christmas in Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas. This is her first NYMF show and she is thrilled to be a part of such an exciting new production!

 
Cooper David Grodin

Cooper was born and raised on the isle of Manhattan, which means land of many hills. He loves to sing, play piano, compose and play basketball. He has played Danny in Grease, Javert in Les Mis, Mr. Snow in Carousel. Cooper has sung many a classical concert with the NY Philharmonic, been in the NY primer of Grendel at City Opera directed by Julie Taymor, and been in Zaide as part of the Mostly Mozart Festival directed by Peter Sellars. He was a national finalist in 2009 and 2007 in the Lotte Lenya / Kurt Weill competition. He thanks his family for being there for him, always.

Michael P. Kramer (Set Designer)

 


Michael is a designer of theatre, opera, TV, and live events.  New york City Productions include Astoria Performing Arts Center “Ragtime”, “A New Brain”, “Proof”, and “Triumph of Love” - each (nominated for a New York Innovative Theatre award for Outstanding Set Design) “Play about the Naked Guy” - Emerging Artist Theatre. “For the Love of Christ” – 2009 NYC Fringe Festival, “A Good Farmer” & “Flyer” - 3Graces Theatre Company. “The Wake of Jamey Foster” - Cherry Lane Theatre, “The Mystery of Edwin Drood” - Gallery Players, and “Spike Heels” - Sanford Meisner Theater. Regional credits include - “Gianni Schicchi” and “Cavalleria Rusticana” - Pine Mountain Music Festival, “The Miracle Worker” and “Evita”- Foothills Theatre Company. TV designs include – ESPN’s SportsNation, MTV’s Silent Library, Heisman Trophy Award Presentation, Bassmaster’s Classic 2007, Comedy Central series - “Stand up Nation”, & Basketball College Gameday. Special event designs include: The Papal visit to Ground Zero and Broadway on Broadway 2007, 2008 & 2009. Michael is a proud native of New Orleans, LA.  Where he graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University in 1997 and then later went on to grad school at Western Illinois University receiving an MFA in Scenic Design - 2001. Dedicated to my 3 nephews and fiancée Nicole.  


 

 
David Toser (Costume Designer)

David Toser is pleased to once again work with Jenn Thompson and the wonderful cast and crew she has assembled. His work is often seen off-Broadway, most frequently at the Irish Repertory Theatre.

 
Martin E. Vreeland (Lighting Designer)

Marty has designed numerous shows around the country including:  Altar Boyz and Into the Woods this summer at Sacramento Music Circus as well as 42nd Street, Anything Goes, A Funky Fairytale (Atlantic City). Showboat, Singin’ in the Rain, and Cinderella (North Shore Music Theatre).  A Christmas Story (Maltz Jupiter Theatre). Little Women, Crazy for You (Engeman Theatre).  Martin has designed at many theatres including: PS122, Cherry Lane Theatre, American Theatre of Actors, Milkcan Theatre, Personal Space Theatrics, New Harmony Theatre, Virginia Musical Theatre, Florida Studio Theatre, Stoneham Theatre, Worcester Foothills Theatre, River Rep, The Alley, Surflight and Troika.  Martin has also assisted on several Broadway productions including The Lion King, Voices in the Dark, Swing, and How to Succeed.  Martin is an alumnus of Syracuse University and happy to be making his NYMF debut.

 
Stephen Kunken (Sound Designer)

New York design credits include last season's acclaimed Off-Broadway production of Allan Ayckbourne's Bedroom Farce (TACT/The Actors Company Theatre) and the world premieres of Matthew Schneck's Badge (Rattlestick) and Richard Thompson's Big Doolie at the New York Fringe Festival. He was the resident Sound Designer for the award-winning River Rep Theatre Company in Connecticut for seven seasons where some of his favorite designs include: The Heiress, Dinner With Friends, The Good Doctor, The Foreiger and Proof. In his other life Stephen is an actor whose work include Television, Film and Broadway.

 
Cathy Bencivenga (General Manager)

CATHY BENCIVENGA serves as both the General Manager for TACT/The Actors Company Theatre and the Managing Director of The Internationalists. Her credits as producer include: Incident at Vichy by Arthur Miller, Bedroom Farce by Alan Ayckbourn, The Eccentricities of a Nightingale by Tennessee Williams, The Runner Stumbles by Milan Stitt, The Sea by Edward Bond, and Home by David Storey (TACT at Theatre Row); Tejas Verdes by Fermín Cabal (THALATTA!); Six Degrees of Separation by John Guare, Bury Him by Joe Lauinger, The 10th Annual Black Box New Play Festival, The Actor's Nightmare & Sister Mary Ignatius… by Christopher Durang (The Gallery Players), and as associate producer on Take Me Out (TGP), and Word and Thought (Austin, TX).

 
Allison Estrin (Casting Director)

Allison Estrin (Casting Director) Casting Associate at Barden/Schnee casting. Film/TV Credits include: Betty Anne Waters starring Hillary Swank; Every Day starring Liev Schreiber; Everybody's Fine starring Robert DeNiro; Winter's Bone directed by Debra Grannick; Dare, starring Emmy Rossum; The Winning Season starrig Sam Rockwell; Happy Tears starring Demi Moore and Parker Posey; Cupid on ABC; Important Things with Demetri Martin on Comedy Central and the upcoming Failure To Fly on STARZ. Theatre credits include: New House Under Construction at 59E59 and Ivanov and The Creditors with the Miscreant Theatre Company. 

 
Susan Manikas (Production Stage Manager)

Susan's recent credits include: ASM - The Dishwashers (59 E 59 Theaters), PSM -  Beyond Words (dre.dance at the Tribeca Performing Arts Center), Cool New York Festival 2009 (White Wave Dance), Caligula (Horizon Theater Rep at Theater Row), Wave Rising Series 2008 (White Wave Dance), The People (dre.dance at TPAC), Esther Demsack (SPF at The Public), ASM - The Bully Pulpit (Herrick Theater Foundation at Theater Row). Susan was awarded a Fellowship in Stage Management by the Atlantic Theater Company and worked on 10 Million Miles, Scarcity, and Human ErrorSusan received a B.A. in Theater from Wesleyan University.

 
Patrick Cecala (Technical Director)

Patrick is a 5th grade Math/Science teacher in Paterson, NJ.  He has a BFA from Rider University, and a Master’s in education from the University of Phoenix. He is two time veteran of the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and New York Fringe - Union Squared (Bay Bridge Productions). Patrick is presently the resident TD at 3Graces Theatre Co., Astoria Performing Arts Center (APAC), TACT/The Actor’s Company Theatre, and Push Productions. Most recently Patrick opened Loft The World scene shop in Paterson, where he spends most of his time creating art for New York companies and the children of Paterson.    

 
Glenn Bassett (Properties)

Glenn has been props master for Sacramento Music Circus’ productions of ‘Gypsy’, ‘My Fair Lady’, ‘Seven Brides for Seven Brothers’ and ‘Altar Boyz’. Previously he worked as a set designer and prop stylist for Stefan Beckman, Inc. for such clients as: The New York Times, Vogue, Marc Jacobs, Oscar de la Renta, Gucci and many others. He is a graduate of Parsons School of Design’s Interior Design program in NYC, and previously earned his BFA in Painting and Musical Theatre from The University of Hartford.  In his spare time he has been a songwriter and has just entered the BMI Musical Theatre Writing workshop as a lyricist.

DANA HAYNES has music directed productions of West Side Story, Zanna Don't!, The Secret Garden, Grand Hotel, Thoroughly Modern Millie, and Seussical, among others. He is the arranger and MD for the HonkBark series of cabarets at Don't Tell Mama's and The Duplex, and wrote original music for their productions of A Midsummer Night's Dream and The Country Wife. He also works as a music copyist, and runs a website devoted to transposing music for singers: www.quicktranspositions.com. His engravings have been published by Oxford University Press and Boosey & Hawkes. Love to SEM.
