What is the NYMF Artist Fellowship?

It is a two-year program that guarantees the presentation of a reading or concert in the first year of the fellowship and a full production in the second year.

Who is awarded the NYMF Artist Fellowship?

The NYMF Artist Fellowship is awarded to an exceptional artist or team of artists who have a substantial body of work, a uniqueness of voice, and who are transforming the landscape of Musical Theatre.

What do I need to apply?

  • A complete script of at least two projects.

  • A link to demo recordings, containing music from at least three different projects. You should include 12-15 songs. 

  • A 1-2 page statement of purpose that outlines your artistic aesthetic and why your voice specifically needs to be amplified at this time.

  • Biography and resume

  • 2 letters of recommendation from people who know you and your work well.

What does NYMF pay for?

In year one, NYMF will provide the space and staffing needs, as well as any technical assets, for a reading a concert through a subsidized participation fee of $1,000-2,500.

In year two, the participation fee for the full production will be completely subsidized with a $25,000 scholarship that will cover the following big ticket items:

  • An Off-Broadway theatre in which to perform your show, equipped with an extensive lighting and sound plot

  • A band package including keyboard or piano, drums, guitar and bass amps, music stands, chairs, etc.

  • Wireless microphones and instrument microphones, and all the perishable equipment needed to use them

  • A sound engineer (A1) to mix your show and deck sound assistant (A2) to help with wireless microphones

  • Tape, gel, and other incidental tech needs, as well as a steamer or iron for wardrobe

  • A technician, production manager, box office management, and house management staff in each venue

  • Marketing assistance through the NYMF website, Festival-wide materials and advertising, Festival press/media outreach, and promotional events

  • A comprehensive conference weekend in NYC for all accepted Full Productions discussing such topics as Fundraising, Marketing/Press, Creative Collaboration, Budgeting, Licensing, and finding a Producer.. The weekend culminates in an invite-only industry networking event, allowing writers to meet with potential creative team members.

  • Access to NYMF-specific discounts on rehearsal space, costumes, build shops, and on outside marketing and printing for your NYMF production

What do I have to pay for?

In year one you will pay the participation fee for the reading or concert of $2,000-2,500 depending on the format, recognizing that part of the overall cost of participation is being subsidized by the festival. In year two, the participation fee for the full production will be $0, recognizing a $25,000 scholarship.

The NYMF Fellowship Artist will also have to cover the specific production costs of each presentation; including creative team and cast, rehearsal room rental, production staff, general manager, as well as the construction and use of scenic, costume, and property design elements.

All in all, the concert or reading may cost you anywhere between $3,000-$5,000 and the Full Production anywhere from $15,000 to $40,000 depending on the size of your cast, your production values, and your show’s specific needs. A sample budget will be sent to all finalists to review.

Does NYMF help me fundraise and promote?

Yes! One of the advantages of the NYMF Artist Fellowship is that you know you will have a full production 18 months in advance and can apply for grants and awards a year or more ahead of your project. The NYMF development staff will share with you grants for which you and your project may be eligible and give you tips on advice on writing your grant application.

When will I know if I was selected?

Please do not check in on the status of your submission. If you apply for the NYMF Artist Fellowship, we will be in touch in early 2020 if we are interested in discussing  your participation in the Festival further.
