Twist of Fate
Libretto/Lyrics by Lissa Levin. Composed by Ron Abel
The Cast
Set in Los Angeles in the seventies. Fortunetelling is illegal. On one particular night, a gypsy fortuneteller is arrested by an undercover cop while she is in the process of predicting his doom. In order to win the respect of her rebellious teen-age daughter who is ashamed of her gypsy heritage, the fortuneteller decides to fight the law, instead of run from it. Appointed a conservative Jewish attomey who is due to be married in nine days and is not sympathetic to gypsies, she reads his cards and predicts that his marriage will never happen, that he will fall for someone who will "reveal many things to him." He subsequently falls in love with the gypsy, and she with him, but when the undercover cop dies as she predicted, the attorney can't help suspecting she was somehow involved and their relationship dissolves. But in attempting to fight for respect, she wins her daughter's. And the attorney's faith in fate is restored when he falls for the stripper seen earlier at his bachelor party, a woman who also "revealed many things to him." Twist of Fate is very funny, very poignant, and except for the daughter, the love story, and the death of the cop, entirely true.
