Interning FAQ

1. Who will I work with?

Though interns often focus in a specific area and report to a specific supervisor, NYMF interns interact with all other interns as well as most staff members.  Many projects require inter-departmental coordination, and so interns get a chance to experience most aspects of NYMF.

2. How many other interns will there be?

NYMF depends upon its interns and so there are often 5-10 interns working in the office at any given time.

3. Do I have to apply for a specific area?

Indicating a preference will help NYMF make sure that interns get the most out of their time.

4. What do interns do when the festival is over?

Although fall is NYMF’s busiest time, interns are still involved with the organization after the festival with everything from the NYMF Gala to getting ready for the next year.  Responsibilities differ with each department and internship, but even after the festival is over, interns are still kept busy.

5. Will I be given a lot of responsibility as an intern?

Tasks range from coordinating entire departmental projects to “grunt work” and errand running.  Our interns are an integral part of our organization, and NYMF strives to assign large and longterm projects catered to each intern’s personal interest.  NYMF interns often receive intensive training and hands-on assignments that will include a lot of responsibility.

6. Do you have an application deadline?

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

7. Will I be paid?

Interns receive reimbursement for their MetroCard, and select interns may receive a small stipend.  Course credit is available to all interns eligible.

8. What kind of time commitment is NYMF looking for?

Both full time and part time positions are available.  Part time interns are required to work a minimum of 15 hours a week.  Because of the nature of the internship, it is most useful for part time interns to be able to comit to a minimum of two full days, or four half days a week.  Full time interns generally work a 40 hour week (10am-6pm, Monday-Friday).

9. Can NYMF provide me housing?

Housing in New York is difficult and unfortunately, NYMF does not provide housing for interns.  For help in finding intern housing in New York, check out www.studenthousing.org and www.nycintern.org

10. I’m an international applicant, can I still intern?

International applicants must secure an Exchange Visitor or Foreign Student visa to work at NYMF.  Inquire with the U.S. Embassy or the consulate with jurisdiction over your place of permanent residence about visa application procedures.  International applicants must take full responsibility for arranging their travel, travel documents, and housing accommodations.

11. I want to work on a NYMF show, can I intern in that way?

Although NYMF is involved in many production aspects during the festival, NYMF internships are NOT production internships.  Interns get a larger overall picture of not-for-profit theatre.  Show internships should be arranged with individual shows, or by filling out the interest form here.
