NYMF 2007's The Last Starfighter, Fred Landau and Walter Edgar Kennon's sci-fi musical, will be seen in the upcoming Village Theatre's First Stage Season as part of its Spring Village Originals Workshop. The Village Theatre is located in Issaquah, WA,in Washington; the production will be presented on May 23-25.
The New York Musical Theatre Festival, the flagship program of The National Music Theater Network, exists to revitalize one of America’s greatest art forms by discovering, supporting and promoting new musical theater artists, producers, and projects, and by introducing a diverse audience to the vibrancy of contemporary musical theater.
Hailed as "the Sundance of Musical Theatre," our annual festival of new works takes over midtown Manhattan for three weeks each fall, with a slate of more than 30 full productions and some 100 workshops, readings, concerts, parties, seminars, and other special events celebrating the newest generation of musical theater artists. Providing a unique showcase for the newest generation of musical theater artists and a powerful engine for new work, the festival has premiered more than 130 new musicals since 2004 -- many of which have gone on to subsequent award-winning productions off-Broadway, at regional theaters across the country, and around the world. In 2005, NYMF was awarded the $100,000 Jujamcyn Theaters Prize for its “extraordinary contribution to the development of creative talent in the theater."
Last season in New York, two musicals from past Festivals – The Big Voice: God or Merman? and Gutenberg! The Musical – garnered successful runs Off-Broadway, joining previous Off-Broadway transfers [title of show], Captain Louie, The Great American Trailer Park Musical, Shout! The Mod Musical, and Altar Boyz (which has played more than 1,000 performances and is now entering its fourth year at New World Stages). In addition to national tours of the aforementioned shows, several NYMF musicals had major regional productions in 2007, including Meet John Doe at Goodspeed Musicals (Connecticut) and at Ford's Theatre (Washington, D.C.); The Mistress Cycle at the Apple Tree Theatre (Illinois); Party Come Here at Williamstown Theatre Festival (Massachusetts); and the Barrymore Award-winning production of Nerds://A Musical Software Satire at Philadelphia Theatre Company. Already this year, several more NYMF musicals have returned to New York, including The Blue Flower, produced by Prospect Theatre Company, and Next To Normal (formerly titled Feeling Electric) at Second Stage Theatre.
