Executive Director

Description

The New York Musical Festival (NYMF), now entering its fifteenth year, is searching for a dynamic, visionary Executive Director (ED) to promote and co-lead the organization into the next decade.  The ED will share leadership with the Producing Artistic Director (PAD) in pursuit of NYMF’s mission to further the development and accessibility of original musical theater for both artists and audiences alike. Alongside the PAD, the ED will have the opportunity to reshape the organization’s programming model. The ED will be responsible for the organization's financial objectives, development and administration, and will report to an active and involved Board of Directors.

As a primary external representative of NYMF in the theater community, the ED must work to:

  • Ensure that existing programs reflect and advance the mission of the organization
  • Ensure that the organization maintains the highest possible quality of service to its constituencies, subject to responsible financial management
  • Develop and oversee strategies for the execution of long-term plans, including:
    • Work with the PAD to strengthen existing programs and develop additional programs to expand the reach and impact of NYMF
    • Recruit and cultivate relationships with strategic partners and sponsors

Key Responsibilities include:

  1. Fundraising and Development
    1. Identify, develop and implement long-term funding strategies
    2. Coordinate Development activities to identify, cultivate, and retain Board members, funding relationships and to execute development and strategic partnership activities
  1. Develop and Drive Strategy and Institutional Vision
    1. In concert with the PAD, articulate and promote a clear vision for the organization, and work with the board to devise and deploy strategic plans in pursuit of that mission
    2. Develop and maintain sponsorship relations and strategic partnerships
  1. Management
    1. Provide chief oversight of administrative and production operations during the Festival, and work with outside consultants to ensure the effective execution of the organization’s programs
    2. Oversee structure, recruitment, hiring and termination of all staff other than the PAD.
    3. Obtain approval from the Board of Directors (or Executive Committee) for new initiatives requiring funding, and keep the Board informed about the activities of the organization via:
      1. Attendance at Board and Committee meetings
      2. Regular reports to the Board of Directors
      3. Communication with individual Board members
  1. Artistic Responsibility
    1. Support the PAD to promote the highest quality programming
    2. Collaborate with the PAD to ensure that programs operate effectively and provide a high quality of service to artist and audience constituencies
    3. Recruit and maintain relationship with artists and industry professionals outside of the organizations to benefit the activities and profile of the organization
  1. Financial Management
    1. Ensure fiscal integrity of the organization, including submission to the Board of a proposed annual budget and financial statements, which accurately reflect the financial condition
    2. Regularly analyze financial performance of organization and adjust accordingly to work within budget and maintain fiscal health
    3. Negotiate major partnerships and contracts (e.g. union negotiations, strategic partnerships).
    4.  Sign all notes, agreements, checks and other instruments made and entered into and on behalf of the organization
  1. Press/Marketing
    1. Demonstrate marketing skills with regard to ticket sales and other means of building attendances at theater events
    2. Supervise outside marketing and press teams to enhance the profile of the organization and to maximize ticket sales and media attention

Qualifications and Experience

The ideal candidate will have 6-8 years of direct development/advancement experience in the non-profit arts, preferably in the performing arts with significant relationships in the theater industry or strong director level credentials working at non-profit arts or cultural organizations. The ED will have proven management skills that include supervision of full-time employees and responsibility for managing a significant departmental or organization P&L.  The candidate will have proven leadership, operations, relationship management, and administrative skills as well as an established record of administrative, financial management and strategic planning experience.

The ideal Executive Director will have superior communication skills, both written and oral, strong work ethic, and an undeniable passion and ambition for creative challenges and building the NYMF organization well into the future. The candidate must have an expansive network of contacts within the arts community.

 Audience Services Manager

Description

The Audience Services Manager oversees all ticketing administration and patron services for the Festival. The position will be responsible for creating wrap reports for each production, handling all ticket reservations for Patrons, Passholders and staff, and working closely with the General Management team to analyze sales trends. This is a seasonal full-time position from mid May to mid August, working with the NYMF administrative staff in the offices and with the front-of-house staff in each venue.

Each summer the Festival presents productions, concerts, readings, and special events in the heart of New York City’s Theatre District. The New York Musical Festival nurtures the creation, production, and public presentation of stylistically, thematically, and culturally diverse new musicals to ensure the future vitality of musical theater. The 2018 New York Musical Festival will be held from July 9 – August 5th.

Responsibilities:

  • Oversee all ticketing and Festival Pass administration
  • Coordinate NYMF Patron and concierge services
  • Create daily ticketing reports
  • Supervise the box office staff in all festival venues
  • Work with General Management team on the final show box office settlements
  • Analyze sales trends

Requirements:

  • Exceptional interpersonal communication skills
  • Background in customer service and management positions
  • Ability to work effectively for long hours in a high pressure environment
  • Ability and willingness  to work weekends and evenings as required by the events schedule
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with ticketing software (preferably OvationTix)

Preferred Skills:

  • Experience with Salesforce
  • Experience managing staff or interns

Assistant General Manager

Description

The Assistant General Manager works with the rest of the Management department to contract, execute, and document all programs related to the Festival. In daily correspondence with representatives from venues, unions, and other theatrical organizations, the Assistant GM ensures the continued functionality and viability of the Festival.  Through interaction with each Festival show the GM team is the central point of information and coordination for all departments including staff, participants, and volunteers.  The Assistant General Manager is a seasonal position from mid May to mid August, working with the NYMF administrative staff in the offices, and with the production and front-of-house staff in each venue.

  • Liaison between show participants and Festival administration
  • Volunteer coordination
  • Fiscal Sponsorship management
