With a soulful, bluesy, soundtrack, Mississippi the Musical is a mixed race, gothic tale of a troubled white girl, Kitten, acknowledging her racism, evolving, and embracing the reality that change is required of her and everyone in Hope River.  The music will draw you in, the story will make you think.  Recommended for theater-goers aged 17 & over.

 

Runtime: 2 hours including a 15-minute intermission.

Gregory James Tornquist

Gregory James Tornquist (Book, Music, Lyrics)

A prolific songwriter, Gregory James Tornquist is from California. 
As a musician, he joined the band, The Peppermint Trolley Company, recorded the hit record “Baby You Come Rollin’ ‘Cross My Mind,” and recorded the theme song for the tv show: “The Brady Bunch.” 
He also co-wrote two children’s musicals: “More Than A Miracle” and “Christmas From Scratch” which were performed worldwide for three decades. 
A die-hard Yankee fan, Gregory James Tornquist resides in Nashville.



Gayle Samuels

Gayle Samuels (Director)

She appeared on Broadway in CHILDREN OF A LESSER GOD directed by Tony Award winner Kenny Leon. Worked alongside Emmy Award winner Peter Dinklage in CYRANO. Television credits include a court judge on Michael Weatherly's BULL, Tim Daly's attorney on MADAM SECRETARY, Matthew Rhys and Alison Wright's social worker on THE AMERICANS, a zany receptionist on SOON BY YOU and a cougar mom on the award winning comedy web series Q's ONE NIGHT STANDS.



Jeannine Otis

Jeannine Otis (Music Director)

A graduate of Wellesley College (Presser Music Scholar), the only African-American to win that award with a Masters Degree from Emerson College in Boston, Anthony Tomassini, NY TIMES critic described Ms. Otis as a “show-stopper” in the role of Ella Worker in Downtown Music Production’s staging of The Cradle Will Rock.
She has toured as a vocalist with many distinguished artists including Donald Byrd, Grover Washington Jr., Vishnu Wood, and Arthur Prysock.



Noreen Crayton

Noreen Crayton (Producer)

Also the show's producer, she’s an Independent Music Award winner from Long Island. She and Gregory James Tornquist wrote the lead single 'Up To Zion' on Ronnie Milsap’s Dove award nominated album “Then Sings My Soul.’ Also seen on Fox TV’s GOTHAM, she released 4 albums including, I’M A MIRACLE currently in rotation on gospel radio all available on iTunes/Amazon. Credits include, National Tour of RENT & Goodspeed/Arena Stage productions of ABYSSINNIA.



Renée Jackson

Seen in Finger Lakes Musical Theatre’s Mamma Mia, Renée graduated from Ball State (B.F.A. Musical Theatre). Credits: Oda Mae Brown (Ghost), Felicia Farrell (Memphis), Paradice (Brooklyn), Sarah (Ragtime), Lisa (Mamma Mia). Malcolm Jamal King

From Atlanta, Georgia, Malcolm is a triple threat, chasing his passion one day at a time. 
His television commercial credits include for Google, Addidas, Tombstone, I Can't Believe It's Not Butter, and most recently Sierra clothing. Onstage, he appeared in; A Sketch of New York at the Producers' Club, "Northbound" at the Theatre for the New City, Off Broadway’s Pharma Bro and the role of Luz in Columbia University production of Feather at Signature Theatre.

Mon'Quez Deon Pippins (Rev. Luther Davis)

Mon'Quez Pippins is a very high energy, skilled, seasoned performer experienced in many productions from theatre and stage to tv and film. Mon’Quez has entertained audiences from all over the globe at well known venues such as Disney, Universal Studios, Carnival Cruises and The Apollo Theatre. He has also appeared on television shows such as ER and NCI. Also currently finishing his first Original EP recording entitled Soul Resurrection. Mon’Quez is a fireball on stage and he is ready to entertain you!



Alexa Freeman

Alexa Freeman (Kitten)

Alexa Freeman is very excited to be a part of NYMF this year. Past credits include; Le Nid (Broadway Cares), MYPLATE Musical, Meet Me in St. Louis (Musical Theatre West), Annie (Tuacahn Center for the Arts). She would like to thank Noreen, Greg, Jeannine, and GPS casting. Special thanks to her teachers at Stella Adler, BDC, and Kimberly. Love to family and friends. 



Kat Council

Mississippi The Musical in her NYMF debut. Council is a proud Hampton University graduate and a member of Sigma Alpha Iota International Music Fraternity for Women. Her theatrical credits include: Memphis the Musical (Felicia Farrell), Legally Blonde (Pillar), Dreamgirls (Deena Jones) Beauty and the Beast (Silly Girl) and Genius To the Beat of Soul (Anika). She would like to thank her husband and family for their daily inspiration to pursue her dreams.

Favorite roles played include Fagin in “Oliver”, Motel in “A Fiddler On The Roof”, Glouchester in "King Lear" and both Jack and Algernon in “The Importance Of Being Earnest”. TV credits include “White Collar”, “Blue Bloods”, “The Big C”, “Gossip Girl” and the currently shooting miniseries "The Plot Against America". Film credits include “Wall Street II”, “Friends With Benefits” and "Now You See Me". Dances with Parparim Dance Ensemble which performs in the US/Israel.

(Gayle P. Samuels) Most recently was the segment casting director for HBO’S Notes From The Field written by Anna Deavere Smith. She has also cast two productions for the Midtown International Theatre Festival – The Dinner directed by Darryl Reuben Hall and Love Lies Treat Her Like A Lady directed by three- time Tony Award winner Hinton Battle which received the Best Actor award for the festival. She has also cast The Apollo Theatre’s Get On The Good Foot (a dance tribute to James Brown) and Big Otis Jump Up Blues Revue both directed by Otis Sallid. Prior to that Gayle was the casting associate for the hit Broadway musical Smokey Joe’s Café’ directed by Jerry Zaks, Twist directed by Debbie Allen and the 25th Anniversary tour of Jesus Christ Superstar.
