An introduction to the art of writing a musical theatre song.

Guest Artist Feedback: From 3:00 pm – 7:00 pm on 7/20. Open to the public. 

This introductory workshop leads participants through an authentic musical theater songwriting process. Explore the relationship between music and language. Learn key songwriting tools. Discover the power of collaboration. Perform original work. Receive guidance and feedback in a safe and open environment. Open to individuals and teams of all backgrounds. Space is extremely limited. The deadline has been extended through JUNE 23.

Anna K. Jacobs

Anna K. Jacobs (Composer/Workshop Leader)

Anna K. Jacobs composed the scores for POP! (Pittsburgh City Theatre, Yale Rep, Studio Theatre, etc., with Maggie-Kate Coleman), Harmony, Kansas (Diversionary Theatre, with Bill Nelson), Stella and the Moon Man (STC/Theatre of Image, with Richard Tulloch and Adrian Kelly), and the short musical Cage Match (Prospect Theatre Company, with Sam Salmond). Her work has garnered numerous awards, including Best Production of a Musical for POP! (CT Critics Circle), Outstanding New Musical and Outstanding New Score nominations for Harmony, Kansas (San Diego Critics Circle), and Best Children’s Presentation for Stella and the Moon Man (Helmpann). Evenings of Anna’s music and lyrics have been presented in concert at Barrington Stage Company, Ars Nova, and the Darlinghurst Theatre. As inaugural members of Ars Nova’s Uncharted Program, Anna and her collaborator, Michael R. Jackson, are currently developing a musical adaptation of the indie horror film, Teeth. Anna is also developing a three-woman song drama, Echo, which was recently presented in concert at The Cell Theatre in NYC. Anna is a former Dramatists Guild Fellow and holds an M.F.A. in Musical Theatre Writing from NYU-Tisch. Originally from Sydney, Australia, she is now based in Brooklyn.

Adam Gwon

Adam Gwon (Guest Artist)

Adam Gwon is a composer and lyricist whose musicals Ordinary Days, The Boy Detective Fails, and Cloudlands have been produced at Roundabout Theatre Company, Signature Theatre, South Coast Repertory, and around the world, including in London's West End. His songs have been performed at Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and more, by such luminaries as Audra McDonald, Kelli O'Hara, Liz Callaway, and Brian d'Arcy James. Adam's honors include the Kleban, Ebb, and Loewe Awards for excellence in musical theater writing, Second Stage Theatre's Donna Perret Rosen Award, the ASCAP Harold Adamson Award, and the MAC John Wallowitch Award, as well as commissions from Roundabout, Playwrights Horizons, Broadway Across America, South Coast Repertory, and Signature Theatre.  Recordings: Ordinary Days (Ghostlight Records), Audra McDonald's Go Back Home (Nonesuch), Over the Moon: The Broadway Lullaby Project (Entertainment One).
