Anna K. Jacobs (POP!; Harmony, Kansas) leads this weeklong introductory workshop on writing songs for musical theatre, open to individual composers and lyricists (who will be paired) as well as pre-existing songwriting teams. Participants will develop and write a song over the course of the week, culminating in the opportunity to perform their work and receive feedback from Tony®-nominated composer-lyricist Andrew Lippa (The Addams Family, The Wild Party).

Space is extremely limited; applications will be accepted until July 2.

Class Time: From 9 am- 12 pm on 7/22, 7/24, 7/25 and 7/26.

Anna K. Jacobs (Composer, Workshop Leader)

Anna K. Jacobs composed the music for POP! (3 CT Critics Circle Awards; 7 Helen Hayes Award nominations), Harmony, Kansas (4 SCENIE Awards; 3 Craig Noel Award nominations), Stella and the Moon Man (Helpmann Award), and Cage Match (Prospect Theater Company, 2013).

Her full-length shows have been developed and produced by Yale Rep and the Yale Institute for Music Theatre, Pittsburgh City Theatre, Studio Theatre, Sydney Theatre Company and Theatre of Image, Diversionary Theatre, Firehouse Theatre Project, Goodspeed Musicals, the Penn State New Musical Theatre Festival, Singing On Stage Productions, New York Theatre Barn, and NYU (SCAN). Evenings of her songs have been presented in concert at Mr. Finn and His All-Star Songwriters (Barrington Stage Company, upcoming), Uncharted: Anna K. Jacobs (Ars Nova, 2012) and Thank Goodness for Ramone: The Songs of Anna K. Jacobs(Darlinghurst Theatre, 2008). Currently she is writing music for a stage adaptation of the indie horror film, Teeth.

Anna is a 2013 Uncharted Artist at Ars Nova, a 2010-11 Dramatists Guild Fellow, and an alumni of the NYU Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program.   As an Educator, she has partnered with institutions such as the Metropolitan Opera Guild, Hotchkiss Summer Portals, Emerson College, and the Dessoff Choirs to offer programs in musical theatre songwriting and performance. Andrew Lippa

Andrew Lippa (Special Guest)

Andrew Lippa wrote the music and lyrics for the upcoming musical Big Fish, which opens on Broadway at the Neil Simon Theatre in October 2013. He also wrote the music and words to the original oratorio I AM HARVEY MILK, which will get its world premiere in San Francisco this June with the San Francisco Gay Men’s Chorus starring Laura Benanti and Mr. Lippa as Harvey Milk. He wrote the Tony-nominated music and lyrics for the Broadway musical The Addams Family, as well as the music for the Broadway production of Aaron Sorkin’s new play The Farnsworth Invention.

Other musicals include Asphalt Beach (music and lyrics), The Wild Party (book/music/lyrics), A Little Princess (music), jon & jen (music/co-wrote book) and You're A Good Man, Charlie Brown (additional music/lyrics and arrangements). Mr. Lippa was music director for Kristin Chenoweth's sold-out shows at the Metropolitan Opera House, Carnegie Hall and others. Accolades include Tony and Grammy nominations, the Gilman/Gonzalez-Falla Theater Foundation Award, ASCAP’s Richard Rodgers/New Horizons Award, The Drama Desk and The Outer Critics Circle Award. Andrew Lippa is a graduate of the University of Michigan.
