Ward 9 (2008)
Strap yourself in and get committed, because it's medication time on WARD 9!
Music by Ludwig van Beethoven
Choreographed by Matt Williams
Directed by Mark Robinson & Matt Williams
IS THERE A LINK BETWEEN GENIUS AND MADNESS?
Set to an all-Beethoven score, WARD 9 is an exhilarating, tragicomical story told entirely through dance. Committed to this mythic asylum are history's most notoriously insane artists and intellectuals, including: Vincent van Gogh, Howard Hughes, Vivien Leigh, Bobby Fischer, Sylvia Plath, Ludwig van Beethoven and Vaslav Nijinsky!
See what happens when they clash with the Head Nurse as she attempts to "cure" them of their creative madness. But will she do more harm than good? Is their madness the key to their genius?
Straitjackets, padded rooms, and electric shock treatment are the orders of the day. Strap yourself in and get committed, because it's medication time on WARD 9!

Beethoven (1770-1827) was a German virtuoso pianist widely considered to be one of the most respected and influential composers of all time, and a crucial figure in the transitional period between the Classical and Romantic eras in Western classical music.
After studying with Joseph Haydn - and under the influence of Wolfgang Mozart - he quickly gained a reputation as a virtuoso pianist and innovative composer. His prolific output includes nine concertos, countless ballets, chamber compositions, choral works, violin sonatas, operas, piano sonatas, works for solo voices and orchestra, and the completion of nine symphonies (including Symphony No. 5 in C Minor - which begins with the world's most recognized 4 musical notes).
Beethoven's hearing gradually deteriorated beginning in his twenties, yet he continued to compose masterpieces, and to conduct and perform, even after he was completely deaf. After he lost custody of his nephew during a prolonged court battle, he went into a decline that led to his death on March 26, 1827 during a thunderstorm.
