Such Good Friends

When comedy came in black and white...some saw red.

Book, Music and Lyrics by Noel Katz

Recipient of a 2007 Anna Sosenko Trust Grant

An original musical comedy about three old friends-a comedienne, a director, and a writer having the time of their lives entertaining America every week. But the pressures of being funny live on television are child’s play compared to the serious consequences of being forced to name names before the House Un-American Activites Committee. "My Favorite Year" meets "Good Night and Good Luck" in this tuneful look at friendship and show business in the 1950s. Starring Tony nominees Liz Larsen and Brad Oscar.
World premiere
Quotes:

a smash in every way... a production that could move to Broadway right now. Right now. RIGHT NOW... It’s one thing to write an apt, craft-filled, melodious score, which Katz did, but we all know the book is the hardest part, and his work there was just as accomplished. Never in the entire festival did I feel as audience so rapt with attention. Afterwards, someone said, “It’s not that you could hear a pin drop; you could hear a tear drop.” That person must have heard mine, for I wept â€" partly at the plight of the characters, but partly because I’m so moved when I encounter an all-too-rare work of quality. Thanks, Noel, and everyone else with Such Good Friends. - Peter Filichia, Theatermania.com http://www.theatermania.com/peterfilichia/permalinks/2007/10/08/Festival%2DFestivities/ ***** Noel Katz's wonderfully funny and beautifully touching Such Good Friends, one of the best musical comedies I've seen in years. - Michael Dale, BroadwayWorld.com http://www.broadwayworld.com/printcolumn.cfm?id=21936

Cast & Creative Details

Noel Katz
Noel Katz (author)

Noel Katz spends most of his time writing musical comedies: Twelve have been produced, most recently Our Wedding: The Musical, which was actually his wedding to Joy Dewing, got full page coverage in The New York Times and Theatremania and the CD sells at www.WeddingMusical.com. He’s had four productions in Great Britain, including Murder at the Savoy (or, Pulley of the Yard) which sold out at the 50th Edinburgh Festival, getting five stars from The Scotsman. Evenings of his songs have been presented at Don’t Tell Mama, The Triad and The Donnell Library. His other musicals include Area 51, The Christmas Bride, On the Brink, The New U. and The Heavenly Theatre.

Noel also spends much of his time improvising: He’s done the scores for a variety of Second City (NY) improv-based revues, including We Built This City on Rent Control, A Time For Heroes and Hoagies, Generation F’d and the all-improvised revue, And Then He Wrote. He’s utilized song improvisation at Fairleigh-Dickinson University, Circle-in-the-Square and National Dance Institute. He accompanies the long-running Sunday Night Improv Jam and Chicago City Limits. Over the years he’s played for improv groups such as The Chainsaw Boys, Centralia, Burn Manhattan, Upright Citizens Brigade and with the then-undiscovered Robin Williams at Off the Wall.
