Gutenberg! The Musical!

DANGER! ROMANCE! EVIL! And even DESPAIR!
Not to mention a PRINTING PRESS!

Johann Gutenberg invented the printing press in 1450, so Bud Davenport and Doug Simon wrote a musical about him and they're bringing it to Broadway. They don't have a cast, a budget, or a producer . . . but they have a dream! And it makes perfect entertainment for the entire family ñ even if some of them are illiterate.

Gutenberg! The Musical! is Bud and Doug's backers' audition: a tuneful, tasteless triumph, celebrating the monstrous success of their idiocy. Shown in development at NYMF 2005, and following a limited West End run at the Jermyn Street Theatre, NYMF 2006 presents the first American production of the epic two-act extravaganza.

Quotes:

Press reaction to the sell-out run at the West End's Jermyn Street Theatre in January 2006:

"Go, go, go! It's the best musical in the history of the world, ever," - The Guardian.

"Contains more wit and intelligence than three decades of megashows," - Five Stars! The Times (London).

"Pure anarchic virtuosity," - Critics' Choice, The Daily Telegraph.

"Utterly brilliant ... the funniest and cleverest spoof I've come across in years ... Mel Brooks couldnít have done it better," - Clive Davis.

"A surefire hit ... it's so bang on the money that, were I a speculative type, I'd almost be tempted to invest in it," - The Daily Telegraph.

"Charming ... keeps its tongue firmly in its musical cheek as it deconstructs and spoofs this most overblown of genres ... this two-actors-and-one-piano method is delightful," - Critics' Choice, Evening Standard.

"Nonstop laughs ... there's no denying the astonishing skill of the American co-creators Anthony King and Scott Brown ... exactly the brand of wit one has all but given up on with musicals of late," - International Herald Tribune.

Cast & Creative Details

Anthony King and Scott Brown (Composer)

Anthony King & Scott Brown have been collaborating for more than fifteen years. Their first project, a short film entitled Rodham: An Odyssey, was a largely unseen masterwork of frugal bombast. Excerpts from their most successful project, Gutenberg! The Musical!, were shown at the UCB Theatre in New York City and in the Comedy Series of NYMF 2005, prior to its world premiere production in January 2006 at the West End's Jermyn Street Theatre. They continue to create works for stage and screen, including their current project, which is a secret. A secret!
