Charleston, South Carolina. 1822. Ex-slave Denmark Vesey strives to buy the freedom of his enslaved wife and two young children. Their love-obsessed master thwarts him. Charleston police then shut down his independent Black church. Will Denmark secretly escape with his family to the safety of the North, or stay to lead his church members and slaves in an insurrection against their oppressors? A powerful new work with a gospel influenced score. [Logo: Sculpture: “Slave In Revolt” by Karl Broodhagen, Barbados. Photograph: R. Norman Matheny. Approximate Running Time: one hour thirty minutes (approx. untimed guess); no intermission
Composer-lyricist Walter Robinson is noted for his lyrical song "Harriet Tubman" sung by children internationally and has been described as "an American folk classic." "Harriet Tubman" defies categories of presentation. As a melodic folk song it has also been performed by the San Francisco and Baltimore Symphonies accompanied by gospel choir. This orchestral version is published by G. Schirmer, Inc. in New York.
As an artist-in-residence at the W.E.B. DuBois Institute for African-American Research, Harvard University, Robinson researched and wrote the music and lyrics for Look What A Wonder Jesus Has Done. This work is loosely based on the Denmark Vesey Slave Conspiracy of 1822.
Look What A Wonder Jesus Has Done has earned over forty grants and prizes in devlepoment alone, including a National Endowment for the Arts' Composer Librettist Award. The work had a natonal tour concert tour to Los Angeles, San Francisco, Boston, Cleveland, Memphis, and Chicago, in 1999. Musical excerpts from this work have been performed for former President Clinton, Nelson Mandela, and Kofi Annan.
Robinson composed and wrote the lyrics to MOSES, a dance-theater work, which was commissioned by Meet the Composer, Inc. New Residencies Program. Robinson was one of 5 out of a field of 70 national applicaants to receive the coveted three year funding award. That program was supported by grants from The Nathan Cummings Foundation, The Bob and Myra Kraft Foundation, and The Paul and Phyllis Fireman Foundation. Steven Spielberg, via his personal foundation, The Righteous Persons Foundation, funded the Chicgao premeire of MOSES, which featured star dancer Matthew Rushing and 7 other dancers from the first company of the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater . The New York Times described MOSES as: "...a new interpretation told with conviction..a celebration of freedom." "The Ten Commandments" from MOSES, co-composed with Charles Floyd, was performed by the Boston Pops at Symphony Hall with the 150-voice Tanglewood Festival Chorus.
Walter Robinson has been featured on National Public Radio's Weekend Edition. He was the subject of a national PBS half-hour special entitled "Walter Robinson and His Music" produced by WGBH Boston. Robinson has also been featured in The Christian Science Monitor, TIME Magazine, The Boston Sunday Globe, The New York Times, and American Theater Magazine.
Walter Robinson is currently working with director Keith Batten (director of international productions of Aida for Disney Theatrical) on a hip hop musical entitled ONE. ONE's creative team in development consists of: Darrin henson, choreograher (Britney Spears, Jo-Lo, Usher, Stomp The yard); Projection Designer, Michael Clark ( Jersey Boys, Ring of Fire, 700 Sundays, and Lennon) and Lighting Designer, Al Crawford (international productions for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater). Mos Def is a consultant to ONE.
Robinson has recently completed a screenplay entitled “The Rose of the Black River,†based on a an obscure novel by Alexander Dumas. Robinson just returned from the Philippines in June 2007 where he was writing a few travel articles on Taal Volcano--his fun side passion.
