Interview with Keith Varney

·      - What was it like to jump back into I Got Fired almost a year after NYMF?
It was like meeting and old friend and a new friend at the same time. It was great to get the show back on its feet again, it felt like old times. On the other hand, we made so many little changes and improvements from version 1.0 to 2.0, it felt like a brand new show at times as well... mostly when I was forgetting my new lines.
·      - How did the chance to do I Got Fired again at DIMF benefit you as a writer? What changed?
Doing I Got Fired at DIMF it gave me an opportunity to take all that I learned about the show and the characters from the NYMF production and really begin to develop it into a cohesive piece. I think the NYMF production proved that we had lots of the right ingredients and the DIMF production was about getting the right mixture and adding a little spice to the recipe. Also, it gave me a chance to annoy the be-Jesus out all of my friends on Facebook with a constant stream of news about the show.
·      - What was the most rewarding part of your DIMF experience? What was the most challenging?
The most rewarding part was definitely seeing the show growing and developing. It was such a blast to watch it play in front of a completely different scale in front of a completely different audience and seeing it find a voice that works in at least two different languages. The most challenging part of mounting a show in Korea is... mounting a show in KOREA. Putting up a show anywhere is a challenge, now try finding last minute props (my all important Mountain Dew) and costumes on the other side of the planet. Not to mention the poor translators who had to translate my sarcastic, slang-filled, potty mouthed show into Korean.
·      - How did you enjoy South Korea?
South Korea is amazing. It’s a lush, beautiful place filled with genuine warm people, great food... and escalators that only operate when somebody is on them! Their technology and energy efficiency puts us to shame.
·      - Looking back at where you were a year ago, preparing to do I Got Fired at NYMF, how have you grown and what have you learned?
Well, its not an overstatement to say that my entire life has changed forever. I've learned that hard work, a terrific team of people working with you, hard work, boldness, bribing people with food, a ton of luck... & hard work can make your dreams a reality. My motto was to surround myself with people who are more talented and smarter than me... and then get out of the way! Its been an incredible year. I'm so grateful to NYMF, DIMF and all of the incredible people who have helped make I Got Fired a reality.
