Put your time and expertise to use!

2010 June Interns
The New York Musical Theatre Festival offers internships in a variety of fields allowing interns to learn about not-for-profit theatre through active participation in a small, open-office environment.  NYMF interns have an area of focus catered to each individual's personal goals and interests allowing them to gain specific skills and creating a lens through which to view their internship.  All interns also perform general office responsibilities to help maintain an orderly office environment, support NYMF staff as necessary, and gain a comprehensive view of the Festival's operations.  Interns form a critical part of the Festival staff and aid in key duties and participate in significant projects in their chosen field.

Internships are open to current undergraduates, graduate students, and early-career professionals, and are generally run by semester (Winter: January-April, Summer: May-August, Fall: August-November).  Exact dates are flexible to accommodate individual interns' availability.  Preference is given to full time (40 hours/week) candidates.  Part time positions are available, but interns must commit a minimum of 16 hours/week.

All interns should have a passion for live theatre and be enthusiastic about new theatrical works.

Deadlines

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Areas of Focus

Operations (winter/spring, summer, fall) – interns interact and collaborate with the entire staff on a daily basis as a central point for information and coordination.  Tasks include database management, mail merging, general filing, and reception.  Activities vary based on the time of year.  Interns should have excellent knowledge of both Word and Excel, and a good phone manner. This is a perfect position for someone starting out in theatre administration, as it gives a comprehensive overview of NYMF, and allows the intern to develop a breadth of administrative skills.

Development (winter/spring, summer, fall)– interns work closely alongside the Development Director and assist with planning, coordinating, and executing all membership, patron, and fund raising efforts.  Tasks include database management, mail merging, coordinating large mailings, regular communication and interaction with members and donors, and involvement in development events including the annual gala benefit.  Interns should have excellent knowledge of Excel and strong writing skills.

Tasks include verification and review of contracts, maintaining resource content on our website and our online database of participants, patrons, and members, conducting research on a variety of GM related topics pertaining to the Festival and the Festivals parent organization.
An understanding of the advanced function of MS Word and Excel is a must, as are strong communication skills, with an ability to see a project through from start to finish. Experience with database systems, ticketing systems, and website maintenance is a plus.
General Management (winter/spring, summer, fall) interns work with the General Management department which oversees all administrative aspects of the Festival including managing all contracts, verifying sales and settlements, and coordinating the schedules of over 40 full productions and special events across a 3 week period.  Interns play a key support role to this administrative oversight on a year round basis.

Praise from Past Interns:
"While interning at NYMF I felt like I was a direct extension of the staff.  I learned a lot about how to tackle issues from a different frame of mind and lessons that have direct life applications, like how to manage and carry out a large-scale project.  Don't forget to soak up the creativity -- everyone in the NYMF office is not only super street-smart and book-smart, but they're probably the best musical theatre geeks you'll ever meet!" - Nick (Summer '11)

"I went in [to my NYMF internship] expecting to gain some insight into what dramaturgs do.  I wound up learning about dramaturgy, producing, playwrighting, sponsorship, general management, fundraising, casting, and party planning.  It made me realize how many different areas of the theatre I might enjoy pursuing, as well providing opportunities and contacts to pursue them.  I can honestly say that I felt like part of the staff." - Liz (Winter '10)

"Spending a semester at NYMF made me feel like I was truly a part of the professional New York theatre industry. I had countless opportunities to network with people I've admired for years, and learned a ton. Every single person at NYMF is so passionate and dedicated, and knows how to crack a joke and have fun even when things are most stressful. I couldn't think of a better way to spend the past few months." - Danielle (Winter '10)

"When I first started, my job duties would vary and I worked with just about everyone allowing me to gain better insight into everyone’s job titles and what they entail.  Eventually I was given bigger projects, working for specific people, and given a great deal of responsibility for an intern.  Originally I had thought I would only stay for the summer, but I have such exciting projects, I carried over into the fall semester and can't wait to see all my hard work come together at the festival!" - Eve (Summer '07)
