Next to Normal
Next to Normal is a contemporary musical that explores how one suburban household copes with crisis. With provocative lyrics and a score featuring more than 30 original songs, the musical shows how far two parents will go to keep themselves sane and their family’s world intact.
Originally titled Feeling Electric during its 2005 NYMF run, in 2008 Next to Normal enjoyed an extended, acclaimed run starring Alice Ripley and Brian D'Arcy James at Off-Broadway's Second Stage Theatre, where it was nominated for three Lortel Awards.
A second critically-acclaimed production, at Arena Stage in Arlington, VA, starred Alice Ripley and J. Robert Spencer, and ran from November 2008 through January 2009. The production was hailed by Peter Marks of the Washington Post as "moving, blisteringly honest, and inordinately powerful."
Now residing at the Booth Theatre, Next to Normal is taking Broadway by storm, nabbing 11 Tony Award nominations including Best Musical and Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for Alice Ripley and winning 3 awards including Best Original Score. Next to Normal also received the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama.
Ghostlight Records released a 2-CD set recording of the Original Broadway Cast, which can be purchased here.
